headstock decal

Post by 9am53 » Tue Apr 10, 2018 8:31 am

Hey guys, my project has a pointy headstock shape that had the standard gold kramer logo. It was beat up bad and I stripped it and will be repainting the headstock flat black, and want a replacement decal to put on. Does anybody know of a good source for this that will fit and look good?
It may not be long, but it sure is skinny!

There's a guy on eBay that has most of them, good quality, and he is easy to deal with. Somebody on here might have some extras, but if not, just search and find the guy on eBay.

I got a Pyramid logo for my Firebird project here:

I was very pleased with the results.

Yup, that's the guy. If you contact him ahead of time, he'll probably make you a good deal on 2 of them in case you fck up the first one, or at least you can ask him for a test scrap to experiment with first and familiarize yourself with how the material behaves.

You mentioned you want to do the headstock flat black. If you want the waterslide decal to be embedded in the finish and perfectly flush (non-raised), then you must layer multiple coats of clear over it and build up the clear around the decal. You don't want to do this with multiple coats of flat. I recently learned from a tech at Macbeath hardwood that any type of clear other than glossy is made non-glossy by way of an additive. Some additive=semi gloss, more additive=satin, still more additive=flat, etc. If you do multiple layers of non-gloss, then the additive can build up and cloud your finish. I was instructed to do all layers in gloss except for the final coat, and then do only the final coat in whatever sheen is desired or your final finish.

I apologize if this is old news for people experienced in applying finishes, but it was news for me.

Or you can do it caveman-style like I do, use gloss and then apply 1000-2000 sandpaper to give it that "satin" look.
