Show it to George. If anybody would know, it's him.

I hope that the paint was a lot cheaper back then! That House of Kolor stuff is big bucks!

The basecoat and clear is the killer, but it makes the desired finish pop.

I noticed while de-glossing the body that in a few places where I could see the "edges" of the factory finish, there seemed to be at least 3 coats of color and 3 coats of white....kinda like the layers of a jawbreaker candy.

That's how kandy Apple finishes are done. White over the primer to make the brightest color, silver and/or gold for shimmer and then the desired shade to get the chrome effect. I wish more makers offered a nebula style effect. I have a shade of blue on it that goes from solid blue to chrome purple at twilight. Despite the popularity, PRS hasn't offered it again, so it must be a huge PITA, as well as expensive to do. I'm sure the number of steps in the process makes it counterproductive AF.

That's what I plan to do, more or less, with the PC1. The first coat of primer is on, which will be followed by a satin white. Then the color and the clearcoat, once I decide whether to go with gloss or satin clear. I want to stay "proper", but satin clear looks so good...

I think I've found the color I'm going to use. It's not 100% exactly what probably came on the guitar from the factory, but it does honor it to a high degree. It's an iridescent orange, in a shade that closely...very closely...matches the original.

This photo doesn't do it justice; it's not as dark as the photo looks. It's not a true metallic, but it does have some shimmer to it. It's hard to see in the photo, but the "top half" is clear-coated; the "bottom half" is just the color alone. The clear actually brings out the shimmer more.

Final "test panel" for the color.

Just because....so I can say I made sure....I'm doing another test to see what the iridescent orange looks like over silver. shrug

Looks like a shade of Fender's metallic sunburst.

The iridescent orange over silver looked like.....well, let's just say I didn't like it. Silver's basically just a shiny shade of gray, anyway.

Sticking with the white undercoat.

Soon...very soon...
