I heard/read that story as well, Greg. The Big Prize came out a year or so before I went to college in Rochester, NY (RIT). They were very popular there due to the proximity to Canada. Always dug Derry's playing. And writing. He wrote New Girl Now before joining the band. That tone on the solo for "What does it Take" was aces at the time! I believe he has at least two of those Kramers.
