I thought trannys came with early E plates but who knows, maybe some were on a D.
I have D-Plate trannys..... :headbang
Nitro thinner won't damage the original polyester finish, but it may be able to remove the stuff used afterwards.
Just remember that they did not use poly on all the necks. :nono

Leave it as is- or do the whole thing in a matching body, head stock respray...Just my .02 :dollar :guns
It's not really hoarding if your shit is cool....

I am pretty sure my 1984 Baretta neck was done in nitro. The head stock shows classic nitro checking.
I am really considering leaving the paint alone. It keeps growing on me.
I will see what it looks like when I get it. I am hoping the tape on the head stock is covering the original Kramer logo.

Got it in the mail today.
Here is the good news.
The Good.
It has original Schaller tuners, tool holder, R2 nut. The frets are in 98% condition with light ware. The fret board is in excellent condition. The back of the neck cleaned up well. The neck pocket was not painted and body wood looks like maple. The weight feels like maple. No body truss rod route. So looks like late 1984? Serial # D0221, black plate. Original color under the neck plate, control cavity, pickup cavity, is Candy Red. The Nobel 500k pot, wires, and jack look original. The #10 was written in the pickup cavity.
The pick up ring is correct.

The Bad.
It feels and looks like melted crayons. It was FILTHY. Like nasty funky stuff. Under the black, red and white, color is a green and canary yellow paint job. Under that is the candy red. It looks like it was half A$$ sanded with 220. The scratches do not appear too deep. I am wondering if the polyester is thick enough to try and sand an buff this thing.
I have pretty much decided to try and strip this to the original finish. Then I will decide what to do from there.
So far I have tried Denatured Alcohol. that didn't make a dent.
I tried paint thinner. That didn't work. So far only lacquer thinner is doing anything. It doesn't appear to be harming the original finish.
The good news is that I really can't make it more ugly. LOL.
No markings were found on the neck.
This project might take a minute.
Worse case scenario I have a player/relic 1984 Kramer Baretta I bought for dirt cheap.

Update.
The finish is pretty messed up.
Not looking good to try and salvage the original paint.

I am not really the biggest fan of red guitars anyway.

Let's start a pole. What color would you finish it in?

I was thinking. I have never seen a Red, Black, White, Camouflage guitar. It is a blank slate now.

Call me boring but I'd do it vintage white, it just seems the right colour for nana Barettas. That said I'd love to see a Baretta an melaga purple.

It would be a good candidate for Electroluminescent paint.
I am into it for the right price and there is plenty of room in the control cavity for the 9V battery.
Can you imagine the head stock and body being painted in this?
It would be fng cool.
I have wanted to do it for a long time.
