small amp head recommendation

I'm not an expert but I would go with what XXX said, I've blown a combo amp's speaker and its awesome to see, but sucks after the alcohol wears off. I personally prefer closed back. When I was seearching around for little amps I did notice all of the reviewers really liked the 1x12 randall cab that is made to go with the rd5. your 15 would likely be too much for it but the comparisons to the orange cab (which is half the size ) were clearly in favour of the randall. maybe its the size of the cab?

Randall also have the 2x12" and 4x12" version i that series, both with Celestion or Randall speakers.

I really want the Randall 2x12 RD, but I can't find any that don't have the celestion speakers. Would the Randall RG 2x12, which is much cheaper, be a good option?

Just in case anyone else goes through this in the future, I'm going to add a few notes. I ended up going with an RG1x12 that was customized by the prior owner, with an upgraded speaker. Works great, and the price was right. I also found a used Orange Dark Terror 7/15 watt head, and I love it. The Orange and the Randall 5 watt both pair well with the Randall RG1x12, and plenty of volume for playing in a band and on stage.

I finally picked up my RD5 from the amp tech...there was nothing wrong with it except I used the wrong fuse size and I used fast blo rather than slo blo. I thought I used what the manual called for. anyways, it cost me 37 dollars, whoop di do. the amp is fantastic, turn the gain to noon and it sounds so good, I can get sounds out of it that Ive never been able to get before due to not enough saturation. I am totally satisfied with this little gem.

yes, he checked output transformer and it was fine...in the end I paid 100, plus I got a new EH output tube and the service for 37...so for under 200 bucks I have the amp and a pair of output tubes to play with and its more or less brand new.

all of my guitars sounds great through it. Its running through a 16 ohm cabinet right now, Ince I am getting more and more into woodworking I am very tempted to build a dedicated 8 ohm singel 12" cab for it...or maybe 15"...that would be sick!

Awesome! I agree on the saturation of the RD. Incredible!

Don't bother with 15" IMO. No good for heavy tone.
