Post subject:  Which R5 necks are thickest?

I'm used to playing on necks that are thicker than what you would typically find on an 80's guitar, I've used Warmoth '59 and SRV necks on my last two builds and like both of those profiles. I recently picked up a nice Pacer Imperial body for a project, I was wondering if there was a Kramer neck that isn't super thin that I could look for instead of going with another Warmoth neck? I know the early beak necks were thicker, I have a Matsumoku Focus neck that measures .84" at the 1st fret and .98" at the twelfth. I will probably save that for another project because the heel is too wide to fit the American-series body without some woodworking. I also prefer a slightly wider neck, I'm used to R4 nuts but could probably get used to an R5 more easily than an R2.

Did any of the early necks with R5 nuts have thicker profiles? If so, can anyone suggest some years and models to look for? Thanks.

The R5s are pretty thin with a 16'' radius. I really like mine just because of that design. My hands would be too small to get a grip on an R5 if it had a thick rounded profile shrug .

No Kramer necks are close to those you mentioned.

Early beak R5 necks were very thick, especially one-piece maple ones. The one I had was like the thick 50's Gibson neck, a real baseball bat and scarcely rounded, very blocky D-shape. I didn't like the profile at all, so I sold it again.

No Kramer necks are "super thin" like Ibanez and such, Focus is pretty much the thinnest of the beaks and the later pointy has a different profile. The nanners are the best compromise IMO, fairly thin and with 16" fretboard radius (US beaks are 10", Foci and later pointy are 12"). Also nanners are often R5.

The heel should be the same size for Foci and US Pacers, all standard Fender size pocket. Of those I owned, the US bodies usually had a .5mm wider pocket to fit both R2 or R5 necks. the tolerances were not so tight though, so it may go both ways...

R4 and R5 have the same wide string spacing, but Kramers with R4 were very rare. I only saw it on very few late pointy necks.

Thanks. When would they have made the beak R5 necks, would that have been 1984? I thought all the beak necks were R2 and they went to the wider width when the headstock changed?

Beaks were both R2 and R5. Most beaks I know were '83, but there are more knowledgeable guys here regarding the exact period. IIRC they switched to nanner with 84 models. you can find the exact info on vintagekramer.com in the catalogs and info pages.

IMO the most comfy neck is the nanner R5, so I'd recommend that one. Also due to the flatter radius, fits the floyd better and makes bending easier.

With a US beak, you'll never have an even string height at the nut because it's 10" radius and the floyd nut is 12". Most people don't mind, but to me that just feels awful when the e and B strings are higher than the G and D at the nut.

The ESP-made "chicken beak" necks that were exclusive to the Focus 4000 and 5000 necks are noticeably thicker profile, thicker than any other Kramer neck I've seen either USA or MIJ. I bought a couple long ago intending to use them, but sitting on them for now because both are thicker than other Focus necks, so that is not what I expected and I prefer a thinner neck.

I have an aftermarket neck sold by "Olliedeane" on eBay. It also is thicker "C" profile. Very nice quality neck with thick maple board, regular beak neck. Many on this forum have expressed satisfaction about the quality of these. I got $10 discount due to small scratch on back of headstock. I have been intending to sell it, just been too busy so haven't posted. Usually they go for $110, I paid $100 for this one, would let it go for less than that.

Lemme know if interested. Also I can take some measurements of the Focus 5000 necks if people are interested to know more about those.

The R5 pointies I've seen were rather beefy.

I have two of those "olliedann" ebay necks and like them :thumbs the only minus is the rather small frets, the wood is great though. He has no R5 I think, only R2 and R3.
