Ed's tuning is much more straight forward now, but when I first started working with him, I was handed a guitar, and asked to set it up the way I thought Ed would like it, and told that I could have NO information to go by!!! I figured that if it were easy, I would'nt be there, so I thought "How hard can I make this?" I figured that if I blew it, at least my effort would have been spent on arguably the greatest guitar player of our time! No pressure!!!
I knew that Ed had a strong grip, so I set the intonation flat to compensate for the string making it all the way to the fingerboard. Considering that Ed VanHalen is not going to stay in one place long enough for a note to settle into pitch, I chose to tune the strike of the string to be the fundamental pitch. And Ed, being a classically trained pianist, wouldn't care if the open notes were in tune as much as if the temperament was correct in the positions he played, so I temper tuned the 7th position fretted notes, and then split the difference with the 1st position. By the time you do all of this, the first string ends up 14 cents flat, but it was about as far out of the box as I could make it!!! I handed the guitar back to Matt Bruck, to take it to Ed, and our conversation at that point went...

"Are ya finished?"

"Are ya sure?"

Next thing I know, I've got Ed asking me where I'd been all his life? To which I replied...

"On the other end of the phone, waiting for you to fuckin' call me!"

The rest, as they say, is history!!!
I'm very proud to work with Ed, and Matt, and to call them my friends!!!!

And a VERY large shout out to Adam Reiver, from floydupgrades.com for getting me in the door in the first place!!!!!!

That's pretty much the story I heard as well. Tuning the barred notes instead of open and for his gorilla grip.
Right place right time scenario for you. :thumbs

But let's face it, someone buys a Kramer b/c it has a Floyd.

I saw him play that guitar in Portland. It was the Diver Down tour, if I'm not mistaken.
