Hello,

I recently acquired a 1987 Kramer Pacer Custom I. I am currently in the process of restoring it (cleaning it up, upgrading the electronics and swapping out the bridge pickup) but am wondering what bridge pickup is in it now (see pictures below). There is no identifier on it outside of what appears to be a serial number (googled the serial number but had no luck). Wondering if anyone can help ID it...

Thanks!

Pics don‘t show. There‘s a sticky in the FAQ as to how to post pics. If there‘s a serial it might not be the factory SD but some aftermarket. Let‘s see what the pics tell.

Hey KickstartMyHeart,

Are you sure they're not posting? I can see them and had another user confirm they can see them as well. Alas, please try these direct links as an alternative...

Looks like a no-name asian pickup to me. Certainly nothing that was used in any american Kramer.

Also it looks like it had a metal cover originally, looking at those soldering points at the edges. The thick mounting screws and the bottom plate material point to the kind of stuff used in standard Epiphone and such guitars, so chinese made would be my best guess.

That pickup ring is from a Schaller which was used in there originally.

Thanks so much Kramer Kommander!

Yeah a friend and I figured it was cheap no-name Chinese pickup as well (was squealing pretty bad too). Gonna try and upgrade with an original SD pickup that would've been in the 87.

Cheers!

I would try to keep that Schaller pickup ring.
And curse the shyster who removed the good bridge pickup before selling the guitar.

Judging on that pickup ring, it was a Schaller 2in1 pickup in there. Those were used in the Pacer Deluxe until '85 or so, but may have been used later (Kramer often used whatever they had in stock, so who knows). I actually like those better than the JB, very heavy sounding pickup similar to DiMarzio Super Distortion but more transparent. I have it in three of my guitars and love it.

BTW if you'd like to try the Schaller 2in1, I have an unused vintage one in "like new" condition in my parts box, shoot me a PM and we can work out a deal.

87 PCI should have SD JB in there. Way past the Schaller era.
They did try to use up all the Schaller rings tho, Kramers thriftyness. :thumbs

Didn´t show on the iPad - works on the iMac, tho shrug .

Anyways. All is said. Cheap asian aftermarket pup without pedigree. Period correct would be a JB/JBJ in the bridge. The ring is a Schaller pup ring (the G50 had the same ring as the 2in1 btw - as have all Schaller humbuckers). Kramer used up everything there was. Again, everything I mention was already said.

You´re one pup swap away from a better sounding guitar.
