I was wondering what kind of finishes were used on vintage Kramer's.
Would it devalue any of my vintage Kramer guitars to refinish them?
I read on VintageKramer lacquer was used. That seems kind of vague.
Nitro?
Polyurethane?
Polyester?

Polyester was the finish used OEM.

Kramer never used Lacquer on their guitars.

If you were to re-paint a case queen simply to have a different color then yes it would kill your value.

If you were to repair one in the same shape as your Gibby- then it would probably HELP the value.

Anywhere in between would simply be up to the buyer.

Did Kramer ever use lacquer on the necks or head stocks? Around 83-85?
Thought I read somewhere that they may have used lacquer on the banana head stocks.
Thanks for the info.
It is very much appreciated. I might want to refinish my Sustainer someday.
I actually love polyester finishes. It is a great way to finish a guitar. Fender, PRS, Taylor, etc., have been using that finish for years.

Sorry, Thought you were talking about bodies.

Very good chance the necks were done in Lacquer on at least SOME because they had about 3-5 vendors making necks for them in those days...

No. I have never sprayed it. I believe it has to be UV cured or something.
I have owned several guitars in this finish. I have repaired small chips, dents, dings with great results using super glue.

I was asking because I just bought a 1984 Baretta. It looks like there is some checking on the head stock. I have not received the guitar yet to inspect it. No big deal.

Pretty much anything ESP-made was polyester, about 1mm thick. Also important for the proper tone, so if you do a refin, definitely do it the same way - thick, glassy polyester. Beak US-model necks had some amber stain below the clear, while foci were rather brighter not tinted maple color and also rather thin.

This stuff (Solarez) originally was manufactured for finishing surfboards, but I spoke with a company rep who said people are starting to do guitars with it and reportedly good results. I plan to try it out, just haven't had time.
