A baretta special neck is probably the cheapest option. Buy the whole guitar and you'll get most of your money back selling the body and pickup.

Great Job. I am following this thread for inspiration.
There is a Baretta Special neck on ebay for cheap right now. Here is the link.

Here is my opinion.

I would be cautious with buying Chinese made necks, or necks that came from a Chinese made guitar.
I have seen a LOT of bad necks, most of them with high frets everywhere.
This is usually do to a few problems in how they are made.
1.) The wood is not dried correctly. I don't know what they are doing in a drying process but it is not good.
It is VERY wet wood when it is made. Then it is shoved in a cardboard box with silica desiccant packs, and stuffed in a giant shipping container for months and months. It dries out, sometimes twists, frets start popping up.
2.) I think the fret slots get screwed up. They seem to get wider sometimes and the frets won't stay in place and start popping up.
Just really bad quality control.

Folks. I see this EVERY SINGLE DAY, on Chinese guitars under $300.00.
On the other hand. Usually the Cort, and Samick stuff is pretty good. Look for ICS in the serial #. This indicates Cort Indonesia. Like on some entry level Ibanez, and Fender guitars.
Look for an S in the serial # like on some older Epiphones, this will indicate a Samick made guitar. Usually from Korea.
These necks are usually pretty decent.
Maybe this will help someone.

^^^Great shares from all of you^^^. I was thinking Mars wanted a reverse head stock, in which case he may need to find a suitable neck and make his own "tranny" :chainsaw or do a paddle head which will still require a portion to be glued and clamped.
......That is if the right one can't be found for the right price.

I haven't attempted this myself, but Mars has skills and tools. YOU CAN DO IEETE!
Example:

SWANTECH, maybe that lack of drying is the reason also for the lifelessness Sergej was referring to when using these necks.

The cheapest quiality neck I know of is what the guy called "olliedan" is selling on ebay for about $100, it is good canadian maple but quite raw work, no options and needs some additional tuning (rolling off the fret edges etc.).

Sorry to hijack, but I have one of Ollidean's necks brand new that I'll sell for $75 plus shipping from NorCal. Maple on maple with beak, and the frets are pretty good too. I bought it a little while back, but haven't had time to do anything with it, and now I should sell it since recently I've done too much buying and not enough selling. I was planning to list it under classified, but just been busy. PM me if you want it - long day at work today but I can send pics tonight. Marsmountain can have first dibs - as Steve noted, you might have to chop off the headstock and reconfigure to get your desired reverse banana, but it certainly appears you have the skill. Or use it as is, come in under budget and be happy. I can include some nice chrome Gotoh tuners off a Focus for $20 more.

Thank you ALL once again for the incredible insight, ideas and suggestions and very generous offers (Doc).

Kremark is correct - I did start this project with every intention of using a Kramer reverse banana neck, but after the realization that I would never be able to find one with a conventional non-locking nut, or that I would have to spend $250+ for one that I would still need to modify, I am now resigned to using a conventional banana neck. And I would like to use a real Kramer (relatively) neck on this "Firebirdetta" so it carries a true component and retains a legitimate connection to the Kramer guitar brand.

At this point I plan to go after the Barretta Special neck currently on Ebay, but if I can't secure that neck, I will most likely buy a new Special from Sam Ash or ZZounds just for the neck like 80sChris suggested. I have never parted a complete and functioning guitar in my life and I can't stand the very thought of it, but it seems to be the logical conclusion to this equation.

Thank you all again for your input.

K.

If it's any consolation at all Mars, I think it will look better with a non-reverse banner anyway. It's gonna be sweet!

Agreed. Better feng shui with the rest of the body.
