WTB: 81 Tremolo Bar

Post by VAiN » Fri Jul 31, 2020 12:25 pm

Any one have an extra gold tremolo bar from a Strat Head Kramer laying around? Is there an aftermarket one that's accurate? Thanks! :toast

Vain, I found one before I shipped the guitar to you, but it was black with a black plastic handle. It fit, but didn't look like it went with that guitar. The one I found doesn't look like it goes with any of my stratheads - but it was in one of the 1981 cases. I hate whammy bars on a fender style trem, so I never worried about it. I probably have 10 whammy bars laying around because I don't use them (rarely use them in my FR kramers). I would send you one, but none are brass or gold. I think you could use pretty much any fender MIM whammy bar and be fine. I can tinker around tonight and try to determine the size for you - I suspect it's 6 mm - something like this:

An aged fender trem bar should also work fine:

George commented of FB that Kahler cam tremolo arms fit those tremolos and you can get them with brass ends.
Kahler use 10/32 thread like most USA Strat arms.

I'll try to confirm this if I can remember. I've got an original '81 Strathead with the original arm all bent in a vice by the previous owner. I'll put it beside a Kahler Pro arm and see how they compare. The Kahler arms should be easy enough to source if it's a good fit.

Did they originally come with the brass end? I don’t think I’ve seen that.

Thank you for the info - let me see what I can source online and I’ll get back to you on that. :toast

Don't know if this helps or not, but here's some data.

Shown is my strathead Pacer serial number A7245. The vintagekramer.com registry lists only 3 wood-necked Kramers with lower numbers, so I believe this was among the first stratheads made, but Pcruis is probably a more knowledgeable authority on that.

Shown is the arm that came with it - chrome with a gold-colored plastic tip. Previous owner bent it in a vice.

Final pic shows the Kramer arm next to the arm from a Kahler 2300 Pro. They are very similar, but I don't believe they are identical, as the shape of the tip is slightly different, and the bend also is very slightly different out toward the tip. The threads are the same, and it appears the Kahler would indeed work as a substitute. I don't know about the bends, overall. If I can find some time, I'll try to play the Kramer with the Kahler arm installed to see if the bend angles feel correct. It never would have occurred to me to try the Kahler arm as a substitute for the gaffed Kramer arm, so I appreciate that idea!

I guess a gold Strat arm with a black end would look ok. The bend is a bit of a lottery, some tremolo blocks are drilled straight down, some at an angle so the arm is leaning back.
