Which neck pickup to combine with Super 3?

Post by _xxx_ » Tue Sep 07, 2021 2:48 am

I know DiMarzio usually recommend Super 2 there, but I don't like it. Nor do I like the Evo.

So basically that leaves Paf Pro and Breed, but I'm not sure I'd like them either. I had Paf Pro in the bridge some years ago and it was rather thin and treble heavy. Breed was Vai's pup before he had Evo neck and if it's somewhat similar to Evo, it will be too sterile for my taste.

Any other ideas, newer DMZ models? Should have hex pole pieces to match the bridge and I'd prefer a warmer kind of tone.

Non-DMZ options would be Schaller 2in1 (bridge version used in the neck position), or maybe Full Shred neck (dunno what it sounds like, only used the bridge version so far).

Maybe a Dimarzio Blaze? It's been almost 20 years since I've played one, so I can't totally remember what they are like, but seems like it would have potential for your needs.

Never tried a fullshred in the neck position, but aren't they a bit bright? shrug

Blaze is 7-string, I need one for a 6-string axe.

Full Shred is not too bright, the highs are a bit shaved off compared to say a JB. There is a neck version available too. No idea if it would fit, just thinking aloud...

I'll certainly try 2in1 first, just out of curiosity (and because I have a few in my parts box already).

What did lumies have in the neck position, Super Distortion?

I looked at the Dominion and it has too much scratchy highs end not enough bass, so that one wasn't for me.

After lots of research, I ended up ordering the Liquifire neck (one of the Petrucci signature models). That one has somewhat scooped highs and lows, with very prominent mids - the EQ-curve should match the Super 3 quite well and I like how it sounds in the demos.

Installed the pickups over the weekend and I'm very happy with the Liquifire :thumbs

Works very well in a 24-fret guitar, quite warm but not muddy. No piercing ice pick highs or sloppy sub-bass, nice growl in the lower mids, very articulate and loves harmonics. Fairly high output, so it works well with the Super3 in the bridge.

Installed them in the Horizon. Those EMG are not bad, but with this set it's another level. Much more dynamics and more organic feel, happy with the upgrade.
